Q&A Session with Stephan Schroeder

Introduction- Born and raised in Germany. Through fencing was able to attend Wayne State on a scholarship. Eventually decided to stay at Wayne State and received a degree in Business Administration. Returned to Germany to begin a professional career and began consulting on the research and data side. Currently works more in the client service and sales side. 

 

1. What made you want to go into business? 

Answer: After graduating he applied to different companies and various fields. He knew he wanted to go into sales but was not sure exactly what he wanted to do. He started in a consulting company and after a few years started to specialize in different companies such as automobiles. 

 

2. What advice do you have for students who are currently applying to internships? 

Answer: Baseball analogy: Even the best batters that exist miss seven out of ten shots. Have to approach with a mentality that you will apply multiple times and you have to keep going even when you face rejection. 

 

3. While at Wayne State what kind of activities did you participate in to build your resume? 

Answer: Be curious and join organizations. Stephen joined a fraternity and then got his first unpaid internship. After the internship, he was approached with a job opportunity. Stay updated and keep up with your reading. Use more resources and reach out to people. 

 

4. How did you get into project management? Anything specifically to do in college to get into project management? Are certifications in project management necessary? 

Answer: Started early and received very good training. There’s a wealth of information and many certifications that one can get in order to continue to learn and grow. Certifications and experience are more heavily focused on when someone has 5-10 years of experience. 

 

5. The most memorable project you’ve worked on? 

Answer: Working in Germany and France and had the opportunity to work with different people, travel, and experience a different culture.
